On The Road in Tainan City

Tainan City is our home base in Taiwan, so we have had plenty of time to explore the area. We have had the good fortune to be based here, because it offers everything: natural beauty (mountains and beaches), ancient culture, interesting and surprising history, tasty local delicacies, and friendly people. Tainan is the ancient cultural capital of Taiwan, offering 500 years of history to explore, being founded as the Dutch colony of Fort Zeelandia. The history also includes the Siraya indigenous people who settled in the area long before the Dutch. A nearby indigenous settlement has been dated back to about 3,000 years ago. The city was also important during the Japanese colonial era. If you're into fine art and international cultures, check out the grand Chimei Museum, housing an impressive personal collection of art, musical instruments, and natural history artifacts shared by the founder of the Chimei company.

You will discover a variety of cultures in this warm, hospitable city, and you can sample a wealth of special cuisine that is a favorite of travelers around the world. Tainan City is a large municipality that includes sandy beaches, fertile farmlands, oyster beds, subtropical forests and mountains abundant in wildlife.

For animal lovers, you can explore and feed the wild monkeys at Wushan Macaque Preserve (Monkey Mountain), or you can ride horses along the beach in the southern beach area of the city.
